As Google continues its phased rollout of AI Overviews (AIOs), SEO professionals need to understand where and how these features are appearing.
More importantly, they need early and frequent insights into how AIOs will affect their visibility before full rollout in their markets.
If you are interested in how we can help you get early insights into AIOs in your country, then check out what launch stage your country is at in Google's AIO rollout and check out below the kind of data and insights our Early AIO Analysis Service can give you that your current SEO software or Rank Tracker cannot.
Latest News: Google announces rollout of AIOs to over 100 countries and says that AIOs will soon reach 1 billion users global every month!
This means that Google is accelerating the rollout in late 2024. So far, in all countries and languages, Google has started introducing AIOs on a small scale for logged-in Google accounts only before a wider rollout later to all users. This means most keyword rank tracking software cannot help you get the data you need early enough to prepare before Google rolls AIOs out to all users - but we can as we can use logged-in accounts!
First, let's clarify an important distinction: Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) beta differs significantly from AI Overviews (AIOs):
- Appears at the top of standard search results
- More streamlined and focused presentation
- Designed for all users
- AIOs are showing for a more limited set of keywords and types of intent
- Not yet showing for certain categories such as news publishing and ecommerce
- Different layout and design
- Many more experimental features
- Limited to beta programme participants who are signed into a Google account in a supported market and who have opted-in to the experiment
- Our research show AI results cover 90%+ of queries (this is how far AIOs could reach one day!)
(SGE is signified by the ‘Labs icon’, AIOs are signified by the ‘AI’ icon)
Currently, AIOs are fully available to all users (logged-in and anonymous users) in:
- United States 🇺🇸
Google announced on August 15th 2024 that AIOs were rolling out in:
- United States 🇺🇸
- United Kingdom 🇬🇧
- Brazil 🇧🇷
- Mexico 🇲🇽
- India 🇮🇳
- Indonesia 🇮🇩
You will notice that these are some of the most heavily populated countries worldwide (with the exception of the UK – although it often feels like it is!).
Google further announced on October 28th 2024 that AIOs were rolling out in over 100 countries and that users could now get them in any of the currently supported languages, including English, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.
However, our monitoring still shows that full availability for non-logged-in users is currently limited mainly to the US market, with gradually increasing appearances in other announced and unannounced markets.
We are tracking this daily as the picture is changing fast!
We're detecting AIOs appearing for non-logged-in users in these English-speaking markets:

So, it’s self-evident that by 2025 most of the world will be seeing LLM generated AI Overviews in their SERP results. Here’s a recent screenshot from Kenya to illustrate the point that AIOs are going to be pervasive!
There are a couple of major exceptions to the AIO and SGE rollout so far. Namely we’ve seen nothing in the EU nor Australia (although a rollout 'down under' was announced yesterday, so we'll soon see. This is probably due to political and regulatory considerations. Several factors are influencing the rollout pace:
- EU Markets: Digital Markets Act considerations
- Australia: Ongoing discussions about publisher compensation
- Privacy Regulations: Data protection requirements
- Gemini Language Support: Rollouts will inevitably be tied to language capability of Google’s LLMs
- Google’s well publicised initial embarrassing errors in AIOs which definitely stalled the rollout – although this has died down in recent weeks and is likely to only cause a stir in new languages

There was a bunch of questions around if Google was biasing its search results mainly in favour of politically left-leaning websites, with a few questioning whether on the contrary it biased right-leaning websites. There was also a bunch of consumers asking why certain left-wing or right-wing websites were effectively being censored from their search results. The last set of questions, were less about bias and more about why Google search wasn’t as good as it was in recent years.
